On the drive from L.A. to my hometown of NYC, delivering a friend of my dad's newly purchased '67 Camaro (with my parents...).

Not sure what engine or trim level. Automatic, sadly )':

Any suggestions? Questions? Advice? I will be writing an article sometime after, probably in about 2 weeks when I'm back home and not as busy.

Thanks! I wish; unfortunately my mom's with us & she yells at me every time I hit 65... First impressions: visibility's terrible, almost as bad as a current gen Camaro; the steering is kind of vague, more like piloting a boat instead of a car, the power delivery is very linear and smooth but not very eager, although it is fully loaded so I'm sure it'd be a little better with just one driver in it; the back seat is terrible; the front seats aren't much better and don't recline; the mirrors do this funny thing where they trick me into thinking cars behind me are closer than they are; the amount of attention it gets is more than any other car I've ever driven for more than a few minutes; and fuel consumption is terrible. The dashboard is startlingly spartan and isn't very easy to read either, and the only gauge that works is the fuel gauge. There's an aftermarket tachometer, but it doesn't work.

It's a 350 swap btw, with Edelbrock carb, headers, and manifold - not sure if there's anything else. I believe it came from the factory with the 327. I thought it was all black from the pictures but now that I've seen it in the sun, it's an extremely dark purple with very subtle yellow/green/purple (I think) colorshifting pinstriped flames. The wheels are stock style but 17" which looks kind of wrong to me. It hasn't given us any problems so far, but does have a vacuum leak which my dad and I will fix tomorrow.

As for Bonneville, I think that was actually part of our original route but we ended up having to leave a day later than planned and we're skipping Utah completely. We are currently near Albequerque, New Mexico at our first hotel stop of the trip. We took I-40 from L.A. and I think we're staying on it pretty much the whole way. I think we are planning to run Tail of the Dragon though (I hope...).

From driving this and the Camaro (SS I believe) that I drove at the LA Autoshow last year, I've come to the conclusion that Mustangs are better. I went to the Ford Ecoboost challenge event a few weeks ago, and while I didn't get to push the SVO (ok, Ecoboost) as hard as I would've liked, it still felt much more performance oriented and capable than the Camaro. The Mustang being a stick might have given it an advantage, but I also had to drive an automatic my second time around and it was still much more fun. Then again, that was on an autocross track instead of on the streets, and I think my impression of the Camaro might have been slightly affected by the fact that I had just driven the CTS-V coupe right before it, which felt much faster and more fun, and I laid down two thick stripes with. As of right now, my impression of Camaros is that they're more for cruising than burning rubber or throwing around a track, but I'll save my final judgments for when I get to drive a ZL1 and GT350R back to back. Anyone wanna offer theirs?(;
